Food and Health Bureau has fully implemented the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme ("Voluntary Health Insurance") since April 1, 2019. It is divided into a "Standard Plan" that provides basic protection and a "Flexible Plan" which enhances better protection. The protection covers pre-existing conditions (that are not known before), day surgery and psychiatric treatments, and the insurance is guaranteed to be renewed until the age of 100. "Standard Plan" is in line with the government's "Voluntary Medical Insurance" coverage, and it mainly provides the citizens with standardized basic protection. The "Standard Plan" relaxes the age limit, and the age limit for eligible persons is 15 days to 80 years old. The "flexible plan" provides more flexible and diversified medical protection to meet the needs of different people. The premium is also higher than the "standard plan".
"Voluntary Medical Insurance" has a tax deduction mechanism. Taxpayers can make tax deductions for the relevant eligible premiums paid by them. The eligible tax deduction amount for each insured person is capped at HK$8,000 per year.
